On Thursday I attended an event called the May Meet Up at the Mangere Arts Centre. It was a gathering of artists and people with dreams from Mangere-Otahuhu and was such an inspiring evening.  We heard about these awesome projects that are happening in our community and country like:

  • Anonymouz creating a soundtrack to help blind people enjoy a film
  • Kolokesa Uafa Mahina-Tuai and the revival of Tongan nose flutes and pan flutes
  • photographer Vinesh Kumaran’s images of Mangere Town Centre business owners

A personal highlight for me was meeting Andy Leleis’iuao, an amazing artist whose work I have admired for a long time. I shared with Andy about the challenges I feel when it comes to making work, of believing in myself. Andy was really encouraging. “When you step outside your door you know you are loved by your family and you take that with you,” he said. “And then you surround yourself with two or three people who will help you bring your visions to life.”

A big vinaka vakalevu to Ema Tavola and her team for putting on the event. It’s inspiring to be around like-minded people – I always come away thinking, “I wanna make something!”

I did a talk at Ashburton Intermediate today – told the children a story about how a book about rocks changed someone’s life.
