Niue

The first book in Reading Warrior’s new series OCEANIA HERITAGE is Niue, published in 2024 to mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Niue Constitution Act 1974.
Written and illustrated by children of Niue who live in Aotearoa, Niue and other parts of the world, these are, in the children’s words, their expressions of aspects of Niue life that are important to them. There are stories of history, myth, religion celebrations, life events such as hifiulu (haircutting ceremony), people of importance to them, as well as records of every day life such as fishing, sports and housing.
The contributors are from Niue bilingual units at Favona and Rowandale schools in Aotearoa, Niue Primary School in Niue and from Niue children living around the world including in Canada, Hawai’i, Wales, Australia, Japan and England. The groups of children were supported and encouraged by respective principals, teachers, parents and other supporters to write and about their home island and illustrate the stories.
This vibrant collection of material by children of ‘The Rock’ includes a map of the island and 36 pieces of writing. Written by children for children, it provides a unique insight into Niue.
