Ō.T.A.R.A

(Ode To An(often dis)Regarded Audience)

Earlier this year I started a writers club at Tupu Youth Library in Ōtara. It’s a place young people can come and just write without worrying that their writing will be judged or “marked”. This evening we launched a book of some of the writing – a collection by ten young men from Ōtara, a place often misunderstood and unfairly criticised by media and wider society. Through their words, they proudly reveal the true spirit of Ōtara – a vibrant community rich in resilience, culture, and beauty that lies in the people themselves. These voices challenge negative stereotypes and invite readers to see Ōtara through fresh eyes, celebrating the strength and pride that grows deep in this unique place.
