“I have been waiting for this book for a long time, having heard the voices of the tamariki in Davidâs other books in this series. This pukapuka has not disappointed. NgÄ mihi nui to the tamariki of Wiri School for sharing so much of themselves. This pukapuka is a blessing and a gift to yourselves, to us and to your whanau. Ka mahi!”

Reading Warrior –
Note to self⊠donât leave your copy of Ko Aotearoa te TÅ«rangawaewae on the table for your husband to appropriate and do his own review of it! In his defence, he is new to David Rileyâs Reading Warrior series and was duly bowled over by its accessible and pointed content. His comment: This is exactly the book I would be reading if I was a tamariki! To see his eyes light up at the images of the tamariki of Wiri School who speak of their MÄori worldview was enlightening and speaks to David Rileyâs achievements as the Reading Warrior publishing superstar and to the tamariki, Faith, Adaiah, Teatawhai and Anahera, to name a few.
This book gives the kids a voice in the same way that Ko Au Ko e Tama Niue and other books in this series let the children of the Pacific tell their stories. Each page of Ko Aotearoa te TÅ«rangawaewae is blessed with the pride and mana that the tamariki feel for their MÄori culture and worldview. They teach the reader who they are and why Aotearoa is their place.
The photos of the tamariki complement their stories. This book is an education of whakairo, kapa haka, Matariki, tÅ«puna, ta moko⊠the list is endless, and the best part? The matauranga / education is all coming from the tamariki. The pride on Faith-Amoure Paruruâs face in her photo as she explains whakangungu / training of poi left me speechless and I realised all over again what a gift the knowledge of oneâs culture and language is.
This book reminds us that this gift is a joy that cannot ever be taken away and that is what enhances oneâs mana. I need to pay homage to the hierarchy of language here, too. It is only fitting that te reo MÄori is on the page first, and the text in English follows after. Thanks to TÄne Karamaina, the translations are sleek and easy to follow, even for basic te reo MÄori readers like myself.
I have been waiting for this book for a long time, having heard the voices of the tamariki in Davidâs other books in this series. This pukapuka has not disappointed.
NgÄ mihi nui to the tamariki of Wiri School for sharing so much of themselves. This pukapuka is a blessing and a gift to yourselves, to us and to your whanau. Ka mahi!
