Cook Islands Heroes: Miria George

Kia orana everyone! Next week is Kuki Airani Language Week and I’ve got a new book to help celebrate. Cook Islands Heroes is a collection of achievers who have Cook Islands ancestry – from legends, through history and into the present. The aim of this book is to inspire Kuki Airani young people and anyone else who loves reading stories of people who overcame great challenges to achieve their goals in life.

Today’s Cook Islands Hero is Miria George.

Miria is an award-winning playwright and poet who writes for radio, television and theatre. Her plays have toured
Australia, Canada, Hawai’i, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

In 2017, Mīria won a Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writer’s Residency which enabled her to travel to Hawaii to write new work. She’s the first Cook Islander to win the famous award. Read more about Miria’s inspirational journey in Cook Islands Heroes
